Make Room For The New You

“When you change your habits, you change your life.” You are the creator of your life, and to create the life you want, you simply change your habits.

Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, it isn’t something that happens with the snap of a finger, it takes time and perseverance. One of the hardest things for some people is that they don’t even know where to begin. Of course, meeting with a transformational specialist like myself is extremely helpful because I can help you tap into your desire for change and motivate you by helping you to tap into your personal power. Until you make that choice for yourself, I am going to give you what I think is the perfect starting point for change. Clearing your clutter.

What do I mean by clearing your clutter? Am I suggesting that you do a Kon Mari deep clean of you home? No, I’m not. However, if that is something that you feel is necessary, have at it. But I feel that removing physical, mental, emotional, and digital excess that no longer serves your growth is where you need to start. This is a process of eliminating, organizing, and simplifying to reduce stress, stop procrastination, and free up space for new opportunities, better focus, motivation, and improved well-being.

When our lives are full of “clutter” it creates stagnant energy in our lives. What do I mean by stagnant energy? This is that sluggish feeling you have during the day. It leaves you feeling unmotivated and thus you are experiencing no “growth” in your life. You may notice that you are having self defeating thoughts and doing a lot of negative self-talk, thus destroying your self-esteem.

Just reading that can make a person feel “heavy” and drained. So how do you go about ridding yourself of this stagnant energy? That is where clearing your “clutter” comes into play. I like to call it making room for the new you ~ that sounds more fun.

Just like you would remove the old furniture in your home before you brought in the new furniture, we need to do the same thing for ourselves. Let’s rid ourselves of that stagnant energy and make room for the new us! Here are some things that you can clear out for yourself.

Physical clutter ~ the things in your environment that drain energy or cause stress. For me it was things like clothes that no longer fit, shoes I no longer wore, old magazines that I wanted to read “someday” but still hadn’t read several years later. It’s different for everyone, it’s just those things that you feel are choking you or feel like a burden to have around.

Mental/emotional ~ negative thoughts, limiting beliefs, toxic relationships, and outdated habits.

Digital ~ notifications, emails, other unnecessary digital distractions that hinder focus. Something that a lot of us have is too many games on our phones. There was a point I had so many and I was trying to play each game at least once a day – talk about stress, glad I eliminated most of them.

Life/schedule ~ unnecessary commitments ~ learning to say “no” to protect your time. Remember that when you say no to something you get to say yes to something that you really want to do. On the other hand, when you say yes to something you likely have to say no to something that you want to do.

Why is it so important to make room for the new you by eliminating your “clutter”? It improves brain function, reduces mental fatigue and stress, gives you better focus, and you experience higher productivity.

Reduces stress ~ cluttered environments are linked to higher cortisol levels – clearing them promotes a calmer life.

Increased productivity ~ eliminating mental clutter helps you prioritize and make conscious decision.

Make space for new beginnings ~ removing the old allows you to focus on your passions and life goals.

Here are a few other reasons for making room for the new you:

·      You get to rewrite your story by becoming who you always wanted to be
·      You know where you want to go and your actions in the present moment are more thought out because they are affecting your desired result
·      As you move forward in your journey to the best version of yourself you will discover what things get in your way and how to overcome them

After you make room for the new you will likely want to continue moving forward and this is an opportunity to seek help and support whether from friends and family or a transitional specialist like myself.
