It's A New Year, New You
A new year has begun. It's a time when we all set new years resolutions. Unfortunately we get to the end of the year to find that we didn't get it done. Sometimes we even get to February 1st and find that we haven't even started. Why is that?
You're probably thinking that it has to do with motivation. Perhaps, but unlikely. Let's take a look at what a resolution is. A resolution is a broad statement of intention or a firm decision for a lifestyle change. For example: I want to lose weight. I want to get a better job. I want to write a book. I want to clean out the garage/shed. I want to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. All of these resolutions are great, but they are stated as a dream, or a vision for the future. There is nothing to hold you accountable.
So, how can we turn our resolutions into something more than a dream? You set a goal. You're probably thinking, "well isn't a goal the same thing as a resolution? Just something you want to do, a statement of intention?"
Well, not exactly. A goal is actually something that is specific, measurable, and has a time bound target with a defined plan to achieve it. Goals turn your dreams and vision (resolutions) into reality.
The best goals are SMART goals. No, I'm not talking about the kind that are the opposite of dumb, I'm talking about :
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Specific ~ Don't just say "I want to start step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Say instead, "I am feeling stuck and I need to discover who I am and find my passion in life.
Measurable ~ Don't say eventually, or someday, instead say, "Within 3 months I will have discovered who I am and tapped into my personal power.
Achievable ~ Don't expect too much of yourself right out the gate. Notice the measurable didn't include the whole goal - only a part of it. The whole goal is too big to put a time limit on. It's better to break it down it down into manageable parts.
Relevant ~ This is where you will state the reason or reasons WHY you want to achieve this goal. Why do you want to get out of your rut and stop feeling stagnant? Do you want to do something that requires you step outside your comfort zone? Maybe you want to go somewhere you have never been before but because you are stuck in a rut you feel insecure. Whatever the WHY, this is where you state that.
Timely ~ Always put a time limit on your goals other wise you leave it open for procrastination to set in, and failure as well. No time to be finished means no time that you have to start. It doesn't make it a priority. Just like your resolutions - I want to do it, but they have no time to have it done (and if you say "at the end of the year" that is way too long a span of time to keep you on track).
Sounds easy enough doesn't it? Well, the reality is that you have probably been where are are for a while, so when you try to step out of this comfort zone your "critter brain" (that part of us that tries to keep us safe) freaks out and goes, "what are you doing? I'm perfectly comfortable and happy right where we are right now! STOP!" Although this is normal behavior for our "critter brain" it's not helping us to move on. This is where a transformational specialist (life coach) like me comes in. I help you find ways to calm your "critter brain" and tap into your own personal power and navigate through your journey of transformation. I will help you focus on deeper, long-term shift in mindset, perspective, on values. I will help you develop the tools necessary to get you through challenges as they come.
